PAPERS PRESENTED
[March 18, 2002] “A Musical Dawn: African American Musicians in Charleston, 1900-1930”
This paper documents the long tradition of African American Classical Music Musicians in Charleston.
Through discussions of Concerts presented during the first three decades of the twentieth century, the paper
clearly demonstrates that Charleston had a vibrant musical community performing contemporary classical
music by African American Composers. Various churches, The Avery Normal School, and the Aurorian
Coterie, an organization dedicated to the mission of presenting the work of African American Classical
composers, presented these concerts to the Charleston community.
